Method and apparatus for forming Nano-Emulsions, an emulsion-forming
liquid mixture are forced under pressure to impinge in a low-pressure
turbulent zone of the Liquid. The apparatus comprises a plurality
of nozzles having elongated orifices to eject under pressure
sheets of the along a common liquid and being arranged to
effect impingement of the sheets along a common liquid jet
interaction front. In as much as the method and apparatus
will permit the formulation of emulsions without or very little
use of emulsifiers.
A term used to include so-called nano-Emulsions wherein the
dispersed phase droplet diameters range between about 0.001um
to um (1 nm to 100nm).
Over the past 50 years the uses for Emulsions, microemulsions
and Nano-Emulsions have greatly increased in number; and they
now encompass such diverse applications as cosmetics, foods
and flavors, pharmaceuticals, cleansing and waxing compositions,
reagents in chemical and petroleum processes, coating s, paints
and inks, adhesives, tertiary oil recovery and polymer manufacture.
More recently, a great deal of attention has been given to
incorporating finely divided particulate materials into emulsions.
Exemplary of such a system is finely coal in a water-in-oil
emulsion as a substitute for fuel oil.
